Languages of Emotion
A
Shadow Carousel with Scholarly Showpeople

Photos: Thomas Aurin
For two years, the research association “Languages
of Emotion” has been plumbing the connections between emotions
and signaling practices, bundling scientific competences from more
than 20 disciplines in the humanities and natural sciences, each
with its own traditions of thinking about emotions. For the last
20 years, research on emotions has mostly ignored the role of language,
while research on language has ignored the role of emotions. The
cluster’s multidisciplinary structure aims to change this
from both sides.
40 scientists present their themes and research at the “Showplace
of Intimacy” in discussion with specialized colleagues, interested
parties, and clients:
Admiration. Aging. Alexithymia. Anxiety. Beauty.
Brooding. Chainsaw. Coolness. Curiosity. Dementia. Disgust. Fake
Feelings. Fans and Fandom. Fascination. Forgiveness. Hymn-like Veneration.
Melodrama. Mimesis. National Pride. Pride. Rural Life. Shame. The
Hague. Obsession. Uncanny Places. Vexation. Zebra Finches.
All of the dialogs can be followed on five
radio channels in the parlamonium, a cross between a translation
transmitter and a synaethesia module. To use the words of Walter
Benjamin, the parlamonium transforms human speech, which does not
sound good, into a pleasant music of the spheres.
In the Apparatus: the
Mirror of the Soul
The excellence cluster brings its eye-tracking system from Dahlem
to Kreuzberg and the lobby of the Hebbel Theater and offers the
audience an opportunity for a unique experience of itself.
With the aid of eye-motion registration that records the eye’s
fixations and saccades while reading, thereby observing, for example,
whether the reader lingers or flies over words and sentences, a
new moving text image emerges. This is usually used to examine the
effectiveness of advertising campaigns or the user-friendliness
of Internet pages. But can’t we assume that eye motions during
reading (how do I read de Sade?) permit conclusions about inner
processes? Aiding in the voluntary evaluation are a confrontation
with one’s own prejudices and an etymologist.
